Why Use a 60mm Wastegate?
A large external wastegate provides greater potential bypass capacity than common 38mm, 44mm or 45mm designs. That can be useful for:
- Large-displacement engines
- High-flow turbo systems
- Low-boost targets with large turbochargers
- Free-flowing exhaust systems
- Manifolds with difficult wastegate placement
- Race applications requiring substantial bypass flow
A larger wastegate is not automatically better for every build. Valve size must be matched to exhaust flow, boost target, manifold placement and backpressure.
Precision Turbo’s current external-wastegate range includes sizes from 39mm through 56mm, showing how valve requirements change across different performance applications. precisionturbo.com
Spring Pressure Options
The kit includes:
| Spring setup | Advertised base pressure |
|---|---|
| 11 PSI spring | 11 PSI |
| 22 PSI spring | 22 PSI |
| Combined springs | 33 PSI claimed |
Wastegate spring pressure establishes the approximate mechanical base-boost target when the gate receives a direct reference without boost-controller intervention.
The claimed 33 PSI arrangement should not be used unless the manufacturer confirms that the two springs are designed to nest together. Never stack wastegate springs merely because their numbers add up nicely. Springs are hardware, not a third-grade math worksheet.
Actual Boost May Differ
Spring rating does not guarantee the exact boost displayed by the vehicle. Actual pressure may be affected by:
- Exhaust backpressure
- Manifold geometry
- Wastegate takeoff angle
- Dump-pipe restriction
- Turbocharger and engine airflow
- Diaphragm area
- Reference-line routing
- Boost-controller configuration
Garrett notes that published wastegate spring pressures are calculated under defined boost-to-backpressure conditions. Real turbo systems may produce different results. www.garrettmotion.com
A boost controller normally raises pressure above mechanical spring pressure. It generally cannot command reliable boost below the installed spring’s base setting.
Ductile Cast-Iron Valve Body
The advertised ductile cast-iron construction is intended to tolerate repeated exhaust heat and resist distortion. The actuator portion uses aluminum to reduce weight and isolate the pressure-control hardware from the exhaust body.
Material composition should be verified before welding or ordering replacement flanges. The listing describes the assembly broadly as steel and aluminum while separately identifying the valve body as ductile cast iron.
V-Band Installation
V-band connections provide compact mounting and allow the wastegate to be removed without conventional multi-bolt flanges.
Before installation, compare:
- Inlet flange diameter
- Outlet flange diameter
- V-band groove profile
- Valve-seat dimensions
- Clamp width
- Overall wastegate height
- Pressure-port locations
- Available engine-bay clearance
A “60mm” label describes valve size; it does not guarantee every 60mm V-band flange uses identical dimensions.
Wastegate Placement
The manifold port must direct exhaust toward the wastegate inlet. A large valve mounted at a poor angle may flow less effectively than a smaller gate with a proper takeoff.
Garrett recommends a smooth wastegate transition positioned toward exhaust flow. Poor port angles can sharply reduce effective bypass capacity. www.hpacademy.com

Boost-Control Compatibility
The wastegate may be used with:
- Direct spring-pressure control
- Manual boost controller
- Electronic boost-control solenoid
- ECU-controlled boost management
- Competition-oriented pressure-control systems, if specifically approved

Installation Checklist
- Confirm the manifold and wastegate flange dimensions.
- Verify the selected spring configuration.
- Pressure-test the actuator diaphragm.
- Inspect valve and seat movement.
- Install the valve seat in the correct orientation.
- Secure both V-band clamps.
- Fabricate and support the dump pipe.
- Route pressure lines away from exhaust heat.
- Begin with minimum boost-control duty.
- Monitor initial operation with a verified gauge or ECU log.
- Stop immediately if boost exceeds the tuned target.
Professional fabrication, installation and ECU calibration are required.
