PLXX 12V/24V 0–15A Automatic Smart Battery Charger & Battery Repairer

Keeping a vehicle battery properly charged is considerably easier than discovering it is dead five minutes before you need to leave. The PLXX 12V/24V 0–15A Automatic Car Battery Charger combines automatic charging, trickle charging, battery-maintenance and repair/desulfation modes in one heavy-duty unit designed for a wide range of lead-acid batteries.

Supporting both 12V and 24V batteries from 4Ah to 300Ah, the PLXX charger is suitable for cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, RVs, lawn equipment and other vehicles using compatible lead-acid battery chemistries.

Its automatic voltage detection, selectable fast and slow charging, seven-stage charging process and automatic shutoff make it useful for everything from maintaining a seasonal vehicle to recharging a larger truck or deep-cycle battery.

12V and 24V Battery Charging up to 15 Amps

The PLXX charger automatically detects compatible 12V or 24V batteries and provides charging current up to 15 amps.

It is designed for lead-acid batteries ranging from 4Ah to 300Ah, including:

  • AGM batteries
  • Gel batteries
  • Wet/flooded lead-acid batteries
  • EFB batteries
  • Calcium batteries
  • Maintenance-free (MF) batteries
  • Deep-cycle batteries

This broad compatibility makes one charger useful across several vehicles rather than requiring separate equipment for the car, truck, motorcycle, boat and RV slowly taking over your driveway.

Always verify the battery manufacturer’s recommended charging voltage and current before connecting a charger.

Seven-Stage Automatic Smart Charging

Rather than applying one fixed charging rate from beginning to end, the PLXX uses a seven-stage automatic charging process designed to manage compatible batteries through different phases of charging.

Automatic operation reduces the amount of manual supervision normally associated with traditional battery chargers.

Connect the charger according to the supplied instructions, select the appropriate operating mode when necessary and allow the charging system to manage the process.

Once the battery reaches a full-charge condition, the charger incorporates automatic shutoff to help prevent overcharging.

Original price was: $125.95.Current price is: $113.65.

Fast and Slow Charging Modes

Different batteries have different charging requirements, which is why the PLXX provides selectable FAST and SLOW charging modes.

FAST mode is intended for larger compatible batteries when a higher charging rate is appropriate.

SLOW mode provides lower-rate charging suitable for smaller batteries and trickle-charging or maintenance applications.

The correct mode should always be selected according to battery capacity, chemistry, condition and the battery manufacturer’s specifications.

More amperage isn’t automatically better. Batteries, much like engines, tend to object when enthusiasm replaces specifications.

Battery Repair and Desulfation Mode

The PLXX also includes a battery repair/desulfation function intended for compatible weak, sulfated, stratified or long-idle lead-acid batteries that retain more than approximately 3 volts.

Lead-acid batteries that remain partially or fully discharged for extended periods can develop sulfation on their internal plates. The repair function is designed to provide a charging strategy intended to help recover some batteries affected by these conditions.

However, battery repair mode should not be confused with resurrection.

A charger cannot reliably restore a battery with physical plate damage, an internal short, severe capacity loss, a damaged case or another permanent internal failure. A battery that repeatedly loses its charge should be tested rather than repeatedly subjected to charging cycles.

If a vehicle continues experiencing starting problems after charging, our guide to rapid clicking when starting a car explains how battery condition, terminal resistance, cables, grounds and the starter circuit can produce very similar symptoms.

Automatic Shutoff Helps Prevent Overcharging

Once charging is complete, the PLXX charger incorporates automatic shutoff designed to prevent continued charging from overcharging the battery.

This makes the charger especially convenient for maintaining vehicles that may sit for extended periods, including:

  • Classic and collector cars
  • Project vehicles
  • Motorcycles
  • Boats
  • RVs
  • Seasonal equipment
  • Lawn mowers
  • Secondary vehicles

A charger can maintain battery state of charge, but it won’t correct an underlying electrical problem.

If the battery repeatedly becomes discharged after the vehicle sits, investigate the battery itself and check for charging-system problems or excessive parasitic draw. Likewise, an illuminated battery warning light can indicate considerably more than a weak battery; our guide explaining why a car’s battery light comes on covers alternator output, cables, grounds, belt-drive problems and charging-system diagnosis.

Winter Charging Mode

Cold temperatures create additional challenges for automotive batteries. Available battery output decreases while a cold engine may simultaneously require more current to crank.

The PLXX charger includes a dedicated Winter Mode intended to optimize charging performance during cold-weather conditions.

This can be particularly useful for vehicles stored in unheated garages or equipment that sees seasonal use.

Battery condition still matters. No charging mode can compensate indefinitely for a battery that has lost significant capacity with age.

LCD Charging Display

A built-in LCD display makes it easier to monitor charging status without guessing what the charger is doing.

Depending on operating mode, the display provides information including:

  • Battery voltage
  • Charging current
  • Charging percentage
  • Charging status

This allows users to monitor the charging process and identify basic battery conditions at a glance.

Heavy-Duty Construction

The PLXX charger is built around a pure-copper coil housed within a combination metal and ABS enclosure.

Its heavy-duty construction is intended for repeated garage, workshop and maintenance use while remaining portable enough to move between vehicles and equipment.

The charger is suitable for compatible batteries used in:

  • Cars
  • Pickup trucks
  • Commercial-style trucks
  • Motorcycles
  • Boats and marine equipment
  • RVs
  • Lawn mowers
  • Deep-cycle battery applications

Built-In Electrical Safety Protection

Battery charging involves significant electrical current and potentially hazardous battery chemistry, so protection features matter considerably more than fancy graphics on the case.

The PLXX incorporates protection against conditions including:

  • Reverse polarity
  • Short circuits
  • Overcharging
  • Overheating
  • Over-voltage
  • Over-current

These safeguards add protection during normal operation, but the charger should still be connected and operated according to its instructions and the battery manufacturer’s recommendations.

Never attempt to charge a battery that is frozen, cracked, leaking, smoking, severely swollen or otherwise physically damaged.

Diagnose the Electrical System Before Blaming the Battery

A battery charger is also useful during electrical diagnosis because beginning with a properly charged battery removes one major variable.

A vehicle may have a healthy battery but still crank slowly because resistance exists in a battery cable, terminal or ground connection. Simply measuring battery voltage may not expose that problem.

Our automotive voltage-drop testing guide explains how to test battery cables, grounds, starter circuits and charging-system connections while they are actually carrying current.

This distinction becomes important when a vehicle has electrical power but still won’t start. Headlights and accessories require considerably less current than a starter motor, so a compromised battery connection can operate the radio perfectly while the starter refuses to cooperate.

Electrolysis and 12V DC Power-Supply Capability

In addition to battery charging, the PLXX can be used as a 12V DC power source for suitable applications, including certain electrolysis-based rust-removal projects.

Electrolysis can be useful when restoring cast-iron and steel components because electrical current assists the rust-removal process while the part is submerged in an appropriate electrolyte solution.

Only use this function according to the charger’s instructions and proper electrolysis safety procedures. Electrolysis can produce gases, so adequate ventilation and appropriate electrical precautions are essential.
