The dipstick needs to represent the actual oil level in your particular oil pan, not simply an arbitrary mark on a stick.
Moroso allows the existing FULL and FILL marks to be retained when appropriate, or new markings can be added after determining the correct oil level for the engine and pan combination.
This is particularly important when installing an aftermarket high-capacity oil pan.

How to Calibrate a Universal Dipstick
The safest approach is to establish the correct oil level based on the oil pan manufacturer’s specified capacity.
Install the appropriate oil filter and add the specified quantity of oil for the complete system. The dipstick can then be adjusted until the correct oil level corresponds with the FULL mark.
Moroso’s installation guidance explains that the adjustable fitting allows the dipstick height to be set for a particular oil level.
Once correctly positioned, secure the assembly and verify that the dipstick has adequate clearance from the rotating assembly.
That final check matters.
A dipstick that accurately measures oil but gets introduced to the crankshaft at 6,500 rpm has technically accomplished only half of its job.
Check Rotating-Assembly Clearance
Custom oil pans, stroker crankshafts and non-stock engine combinations can change the amount of available clearance inside the oil pan.
Moroso specifically recommends checking dipstick-to-rotating-assembly clearance regardless of the engine combination.
This becomes especially important on stroker engines, racing oil pans and engine swaps where the factory relationship between the crankshaft, pan and dipstick no longer exists.
Rotate the engine manually through a complete cycle during installation and confirm that the dipstick and internal portion of the tube cannot contact the crankshaft, connecting rods or other rotating components.
Crankcase Pressure Matters
A dipstick that repeatedly pushes upward shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as a bad dipstick.
It can also be a symptom.
Excessive crankcase pressure may indicate problems involving:
- PCV system operation
- Crankcase ventilation
- Excessive blow-by
- Worn piston rings
- Improper breather configuration
- Boost entering the crankcase
- Restricted evacuation systems

A locking dipstick can prevent the handle from being pushed out, but it shouldn’t be used to disguise a crankcase-pressure problem that needs diagnosis.

The Moroso 25973 makes particular sense when an aftermarket oil pan changes the factory dipstick location.
Moroso lists the universal 25973 as an available option with numerous performance oil pans, including applications for Chevrolet big-block, Ford small-block, Ford FE and GM LS engines.
That doesn’t make the dipstick automatically vehicle-specific. Instead, it means the universal design can be adapted to compatible oil pans and engine combinations that provide—or can be modified to provide—the appropriate mounting provision.
For engine swaps and custom builds, that flexibility is often more valuable than trying to force a factory dipstick tube around headers or chassis components that were never designed to coexist.

Before ordering, confirm:
- Oil pan dipstick provision
- Available mounting location
- Header and exhaust clearance
- Required dipstick length
- Oil-pan capacity
- Internal rotating-assembly clearance
- Ability to install the supplied fitting if required
This isn’t a year/make/model replacement dipstick where compatibility should be assumed from a vehicle lookup alone.

For a completely stock daily driver with an intact factory dipstick system, replacing everything with a universal racing-style assembly probably isn’t necessary.
For a swapped, stroked, turbocharged or competition engine where the original dipstick location disappeared somewhere between the headers and chassis, the 25973 starts making considerably more sense.
