Compact Eaton H122 Design
The Eaton H122 is a positive-displacement rotor assembly that moves a fixed volume of air with each revolution. This provides immediate boost response and broad torque delivery instead of waiting for engine speed to build before the supercharger begins doing useful work.
Benefits include:
- Immediate throttle response
- Strong low-speed torque
- Broad street-oriented powerband
- Compact supercharger packaging
- Lower installed height than a traditional 6-71
- Carbureted induction
- Conventional SBC cylinder-head compatibility
The compact layout may fit beneath the hood of many muscle cars and street rods, but hood clearance must be measured. “May fit” and “will fit” are separated by a tape measure and, occasionally, an expensive new hood.
Factory-Style Accessory Drive Compatibility
The E-Force 122 is designed to operate alongside the engine’s original-style accessory belts. A dedicated secondary six-rib belt drives the supercharger while the factory-style system continues operating the water pump and accessories.
Required Configuration
- Long-style Small-Block Chevy water pump
- Stock-style accessory brackets
- Factory-style V-belt accessory drive
- Compatible crankshaft pulley arrangement
Not Compatible With
- Aftermarket serpentine conversion systems
- Short-style water pumps
- Vortec-specific intake configurations without confirmed compatibility
- Raised-deck SBC blocks
- LS-series engines
- Big-Block Chevrolet engines
- Unverified aftermarket cylinder-head intake patterns
Complete Supercharger Package
The Edelbrock 1551 kit includes the major components required to install the system on a compatible engine:
- E-Force 122 supercharger assembly
- Eaton H122 internal rotor assembly
- Small-Block Chevy intake manifold
- 3.75-inch supercharger pulley
- Six-rib supercharger drive system
- Drive pulleys
- Supercharger belt
- Installation gaskets
- Application-specific installation hardware
A carburetor is not included, allowing the builder to choose one that matches the engine’s displacement and intended use.
Carburetor and Fuel-System Requirements
The E-Force 122 uses a conventional carburetor mounted above the supercharger inlet. Carburetor sizing and calibration must account for the engine combination and additional airflow.
The installation may require:
- Properly sized four-barrel carburetor
- High-capacity mechanical or electric fuel pump
- Compatible fuel-pressure regulator
- Upgraded fuel lines
- Supercharger-compatible carburetor calibration
- Wideband oxygen-sensor monitoring
- Professional chassis-dyno tuning
An incorrectly calibrated carburetor can create lean operation, detonation and engine damage. More air requires more fuel; physics remains stubbornly opposed to budget shortcuts.
Engine Preparation
Before installation, verify that the engine is mechanically healthy and suitable for boost. A compression test and cylinder-leakage test are recommended for an assembled engine with unknown history.
Inspect or verify:
- Compression ratio
- Piston and connecting-rod condition
- Piston-ring gaps
- Crankshaft and harmonic balancer
- Cooling-system capacity
- Fuel-system capacity
- Ignition-system condition
- Spark-plug heat range
- Exhaust-system flow
- Oil pressure
The tested 9.5:1 compression ratio and 5-PSI configuration demonstrate that moderate boost can work in a street-oriented combination, but fuel octane and ignition timing remain critical.
Ignition Timing and Detonation Control
Forced induction increases cylinder pressure and sensitivity to detonation. Total timing, initial timing and the advance curve should be established for the specific engine, boost pressure and fuel.
A safe installation may require:
- Boost-referenced ignition retard
- Conservative total timing
- High-quality fuel
- Colder spark plugs
- Reduced spark-plug gap
- Wideband air/fuel monitoring
- Knock monitoring
- Professional dyno calibration
Never assume a naturally aspirated timing curve will remain safe under boost.
Installed Dimensions
Edelbrock lists the following manifold dimensions:
- Manifold height A: 8.50 inches
- Manifold height B: 9.75 inches
- Carburetor pad height: 9.125 inches
- Typical carburetor height: 3.25 inches
These dimensions do not necessarily include the air cleaner. Measure from the engine’s intake sealing surface to the underside of the hood and account for engine movement under load.
Street-Legal Status
The product is marketed as a street-legal supercharger system, but legality depends on the specific vehicle, model year, engine configuration and jurisdiction. Many vehicles using a traditional carbureted Small-Block Chevy predate modern emissions requirements, while later vehicles may be subject to inspection and equipment rules.
Before advertising or installing this kit as California emissions legal, confirm that Edelbrock part number 1551 and the intended vehicle are covered by an active exemption in the official CARB aftermarket-parts database.
Installation Recommendations
Professional installation is recommended. Before beginning:
- Read the current Edelbrock installation manual
- Confirm the long-water-pump configuration
- Verify stock-style accessory brackets
- Measure hood clearance
- Inspect the harmonic balancer and crank pulley
- Confirm fuel-system capacity
- Check ignition compatibility
- Establish a conservative initial tune
- Verify belt alignment and tension
- Check all intake surfaces for leaks
