AW5104 Water Pump with Thermostat for 1999–2006 Chevy and GMC V8 Vehicles

This AW5104 water-pump kit combines a serpentine-belt-driven mechanical pump, preinstalled thermostat and four sealing components for select GM vehicles equipped with Gen III 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L V8 engines.

It commonly replaces ACDelco 252-845, GM 19195104 and Gates 45006. Fitment remains vehicle- and engine-specific; “1999–2006 Chevy” covers a lot of machinery, including several engines that want absolutely nothing to do with this pump.

Fitment Exclusions

This pump generally does not fit:

  • 4.3L V6 engines
  • 5.7L Vortec engines
  • 6.6L Duramax diesel engines
  • 8.1L big-block engines
  • GM Atlas 4.2L inline-six engines
  • Most 2007-new-body GMT900 vehicles

What Comes in the Package?

The kit is advertised to contain:

  • One assembled AW5104 water pump
  • One preinstalled thermostat
  • Two metal water-pump gaskets
  • One thermostat gasket
  • One sealing ring

Inspect the contents before draining the cooling system. Mounting bolts, coolant, hoses and specialty tools are not listed as included.

Product Quality Claims

The seller states that the pump:

  • Is manufactured in an ISO 9001-certified facility
  • Is produced under an IATF 16949-certified quality system
  • Uses premium internal components
  • Undergoes leakage and performance testing
  • Is supported by a one-year replacement warranty
  • Was tested using equipment associated with DV Canada

These are manufacturer claims. Certification of a factory’s quality-management system does not independently prove that a specific pump exceeds OE performance.

The phrase “exceeds original factory standards” should only be used if the manufacturer can provide applicable test data. Safer product wording is that the pump is designed as an OE-style replacement.

Will This Water Pump Fix Overheating?

It will correct overheating only when inadequate circulation from a failed water pump or thermostat is the actual cause.

Overheating can also result from:

  • Low coolant
  • Trapped air
  • Cooling-fan failure
  • A restricted radiator
  • Damaged hoses
  • Incorrect coolant
  • A failed pressure cap
  • Combustion gases entering the cooling system
  • Incorrect ignition or fuel control
  • Towing or loading beyond available cooling capacity

No responsible product page should guarantee that one component will fix every overheating complaint. Diagnosis still exists, inconvenient though that may be for the parts cannon.

Read our bad thermostat versus bad water pump guide before ordering.

Common Signs of Water-Pump Failure

  • Coolant leaking from the pump or weep hole
  • Dried coolant residue around the housing
  • Grinding or growling bearing noise
  • Pulley or fan wobble
  • Repeated serpentine-belt problems
  • Poor coolant circulation
  • Rising engine temperature
  • Repeated coolant loss

If coolant is disappearing, follow our coolant-leak diagnostic guide to identify the source.

Installation Recommendations

  1. Verify the vehicle, engine and original pump number.
  2. Let the engine cool completely.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Drain the coolant into an appropriate container.
  5. Remove the intake duct and fan shroud as required.
  6. Remove the fan clutch and serpentine belt.
  7. Disconnect the radiator and heater hoses from the pump.
  8. Clean the engine’s sealing surfaces carefully.
  9. Install both metal pump gaskets in the correct orientation.
  10. Torque all fasteners to GM specifications.
  11. Inspect the belt, tensioner, idlers and fan clutch.
  12. Refill with the correct coolant mixture.
  13. Bleed trapped air from the cooling system.
  14. Inspect for leakage after reaching operating temperature.

Never remove the coolant cap while the system is hot or pressurized.

If the coolant is contaminated, follow our cooling-system flushing guide. Consult our coolant-types guide before refilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does AW5104 fit?

It fits select 1999–2006 Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Hummer, Isuzu and Saab vehicles equipped with compatible Gen III 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L V8 engines.

Does AW5104 fit a 2006 Trailblazer?

Only V8 models. It does not fit the standard 4.2L inline-six. The 6.0L application is the Trailblazer SS.

Does this pump fit a 2007 Silverado?

Some 2007 Silverado Classic models may use this pump, but the redesigned GMT900 Silverado generally uses the later AW6009-style assembly. Verify the VIN and original part number.

Does it fit a 5.7L Vortec?

No. The earlier 5.7L small-block uses a different water-pump design.

Is the thermostat included?

Yes. This particular kit advertises a preinstalled thermostat.

Are four gaskets included?

The listing describes four sealing components: two metal pump gaskets, a thermostat gasket and a sealing ring.

Does AW5104 fit Duramax engines?

No. It does not fit the 6.6L Duramax diesel.

Are 252-782 and 252-845 valid interchanges?

Both have been cataloged within this pump family. ACDelco 252-845/GM 19195104 is the clearest current reference. Confirm older 252-782 applications by VIN because pump revisions and included components may differ.
