Fitment Restrictions

This pump does not fit every vehicle with one of the listed displacements. Confirm:

  • VIN and engine code
  • Gasoline versus diesel engine
  • Pump casting and original part number
  • Thermostat-housing configuration
  • Heater-hose and radiator-hose connections
  • Pulley and fan arrangement
  • Production date on transition-year vehicles

It generally does not fit:

  • 6.6L Duramax diesel engines
  • 4.3L V6 engines
  • Earlier 1999–2006 Gen III applications using AW5104/252-845
  • Most 2014-and-newer EcoTec3 5.3L and 6.2L truck engines
  • LT-series direct-injected V8 engines
  • Belt-drive systems with a different pulley or pump offset

The 2007 model year included both GMT800 Classic and GMT900 trucks. Verify the body generation instead of assuming all 2007 Silverados share one pump. That would have been convenient, so naturally they do not.

Some online specifications incorrectly categorize this pump as timing-belt driven. These GM truck engines use an external serpentine belt to drive the water pump.

What Comes in the Box?

The package typically contains:

  • One ACDelco 252-901 water pump
  • Two water-pump-to-engine gaskets
  • Application-specific seals or O-rings where supplied

The thermostat, pulley, fan clutch, bolts and coolant are not included unless a seller specifically offers them as part of a separate bundle.

Premium Aftermarket Construction

ACDelco identifies the following product features:

  • Coated seals for improved durability
  • Heat-treated shaft assembly
  • Permanently sealed and lubricated bearings
  • Uniform housing-wall thickness
  • Smooth coolant-flow cavities
  • Leak-resistant testing
  • Vehicle-specific mounting dimensions

ACDelco Gold is the brand’s premium aftermarket range. It is not automatically the same as a GM Original Equipment pump, even when both appear in a retailer’s product comparison.

What Does the Water Pump Do?

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder heads, heater circuit and radiator. Its steel impeller must maintain enough flow to prevent localized hot spots and carry combustion heat away from the engine.

A pump can fail through:

  • Mechanical-seal deterioration
  • Bearing wear
  • Shaft play
  • Impeller corrosion
  • Contaminated coolant
  • Belt misalignment
  • Excessive load from a damaged fan clutch
  • Improper gasket installation

Our bad thermostat versus bad water pump guide explains how to distinguish two common cooling-system failures.

Common Water-Pump Failure Symptoms

  • Coolant leaking from the pump or weep hole
  • Dried coolant residue around the housing
  • Grinding or growling noise
  • Pulley or fan wobble
  • Serpentine-belt misalignment
  • Repeated coolant loss
  • Overheating at idle or under load
  • Weak cabin heat combined with overheating
  • Cooling fans running without controlling temperature

Overheating alone does not prove the pump is defective. Low coolant, trapped air, a restricted radiator, failed thermostat or combustion leak can create similar symptoms.

Use our coolant-leak diagnostic guide before replacing parts.

Installation Recommendations

  1. Verify the OE number and engine application.
  2. Let the engine cool completely.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  5. Remove the intake duct and fan shroud as required.
  6. Remove the mechanical fan and fan clutch where fitted.
  7. Release the serpentine belt.
  8. Disconnect the hoses from the pump.
  9. Clean the engine’s gasket surfaces carefully.
  10. Install the supplied gaskets in the correct orientation.
  11. Torque all fasteners to the proper GM specification.
  12. Inspect the belt, tensioner, idlers and fan clutch.
  13. Refill with the specified coolant.
  14. Bleed trapped air and inspect for leaks.
  15. Verify stable coolant temperature during a road test.

Do not reuse badly corroded bolts or bury the gaskets under excessive RTV. More sealant does not create more sealing; it creates orange debris looking for a radiator passage.

If the old coolant is contaminated, follow our cooling-system flushing guide. Consult our coolant-types guide before refilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles does ACDelco 252-901 fit?

It fits numerous 2007–2020 GM trucks, SUVs and vans equipped with compatible 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L or 6.2L V8 engines.

Does it fit a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado?

It fits selected new-body GMT900 applications. Some 2007 Silverado Classic trucks use the earlier AW5104/252-845 pump, so verify the VIN and original part number.

Does it fit a 2014 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3L engine?

Generally no. Most 2014 Silverado 1500 models use the direct-injected EcoTec3 L83 engine and a different pump. The 2014 Silverado HD and certain carryover applications require separate verification.

Does it fit a Duramax diesel?

No. The 6.6L Duramax uses a different water-pump design.

Does 252-901 include the thermostat?

No. The thermostat and housing are separate components.

Are 252-901 and 19253263 the same reference?

Yes. ACDelco uses 252-901 as the product number, while 19253263 is the associated GM reference.

Does this pump fit the Trailblazer SS?

Yes, it is cataloged for the 2007–2009 Trailblazer SS with the 6.0L LS2 V8. Verify the OE number before ordering.

Is the pulley included?

No. The original pulley normally transfers to the new pump.
