Workhorse and Commercial Chassis
ACDelco 252-711 is also cataloged for selected Workhorse and GM commercial chassis using Chevrolet 4.3L or 5.7L engines. Commercial applications vary substantially by chassis, gross-vehicle-weight rating and accessory layout, so verify these installations by VIN and original pump number.
Important Fitment Limits
This pump does not fit every engine offered in the models above. It generally does not fit:
- GM 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L LS-based V8 engines
- 6.5L diesel engines
- 7.4L or 8.1L big-block engines
- 2014-and-newer EcoTec3 4.3L LV3 engines
- First-generation non-Vortec applications requiring a standard-rotation pump
- Vehicles with a different fan-clutch or pulley mounting design
The 1999–2000 model years are especially dangerous for parts-store guesswork because GM sold old- and new-platform trucks simultaneously. Verify the body generation, VIN and engine code.

Why Reverse Rotation Matters
This pump is designed for serpentine-belt systems that rotate the water-pump impeller opposite the crankshaft. That is known as reverse rotation.
A standard-rotation pump may physically resemble the correct unit, but its impeller is designed to move coolant in the opposite direction. Installing the wrong pump can produce poor circulation and immediate overheating while leaving everyone involved staring suspiciously at a brand-new part.
Confirm the following before installation:
- Belt routing
- Impeller rotation
- Fan-clutch thread
- Pulley offset
- Hose and bypass-port arrangement
- Original casting or interchange number
ACDelco Gold Construction
ACDelco identifies several durability features:
- Coated seals intended to improve service life
- Heat-treated shaft assemblies
- Permanently lubricated and sealed bearings
- Smooth internal coolant passages
- Uniform housing-wall sections
- Leak-resistant factory testing
- Vehicle-specific dimensions
ACDelco Gold is the company’s premium aftermarket line. It is designed as an OE-style replacement but should not be confused with a GM Original Equipment pump unless the listing specifically identifies it as GM OE.
What Comes in the Box?
The package generally contains:
- One ACDelco 252-711 water-pump assembly
- Water-pump gaskets
- Application-specific seals or O-rings where required
The thermostat, pulley, fan clutch, mounting bolts and coolant are not included unless separately stated by the seller.
Signs the Water Pump May Be Failing
Common symptoms include:
- Coolant leaking near the front of the engine
- Dried orange or white residue around the pump
- Leakage from the weep hole
- Grinding or growling bearing noise
- Fan or pulley wobble
- Serpentine-belt misalignment
- Repeated coolant loss
- Engine overheating
- Weak heater output combined with rising engine temperature
Pump symptoms overlap with thermostat, radiator and head-gasket failures. Read our bad thermostat versus bad water pump guide before replacing parts based entirely on the temperature gauge.
For visible coolant loss, follow our coolant-leak diagnostic procedure.
Installation Recommendations
- Confirm the VIN, engine and pump interchange.
- Let the engine cool completely.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
- Remove the fan shroud and fan clutch where required.
- Remove the serpentine belt and pump pulley.
- Inspect the fan clutch, belt, tensioner and idlers.
- Clean the engine’s gasket surfaces without gouging them.
- Install the supplied gaskets according to ACDelco instructions.
- Torque the fasteners to the correct service specification.
- Confirm pulley alignment and proper belt routing.
- Refill with the specified coolant.
- Bleed trapped air from the system.
- Check for leaks and verify stable operating temperature.
Inspect the fan clutch carefully. A damaged, seized or unbalanced clutch can overload the new pump’s bearing and turn a successful repair into an encore performance.
For contaminated coolant, use our cooling-system flushing guide. Consult our coolant-types guide rather than selecting antifreeze solely by color.
Frequently Asked Questions
What vehicles does ACDelco 252-711 fit?
It fits selected 1996–2014 GM trucks, vans and SUVs using compatible 4.3L V6, 5.0L V8 or 5.7L V8 engines. Common models include the Astro, Blazer, S10, Silverado, Express, Safari, Jimmy, Sonoma, Sierra and Savana.
Does it fit a 1999–2013 Silverado 1500?
It fits listed Silverado 1500 models equipped with the older 4.3L Vortec V6. It does not fit the 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L LS-family V8 engines.
Does it fit a 2014 Silverado with the 4.3L V6?
No. The redesigned 2014 Silverado uses the EcoTec3 4.3L LV3 engine and a different cooling-system configuration.
Does 252-711 fit a 5.7L Vortec?
It fits many 1996–2000 5.7L Vortec applications, but the vehicle and accessory configuration must still be verified.
Is the thermostat included?
No. The thermostat is a separate component.
Is the pulley included?
No. The existing pulley normally transfers to the replacement pump.
Is this a standard-rotation water pump?
No. It uses a reverse-rotation impeller for compatible serpentine-belt systems.
Are 252-711 and 88926225 the same reference?
Yes. ACDelco uses part number 252-711, while 88926225 is the associated GM reference.
