Monroe Gas Magnum Shock Absorber Module 4

Hardworking midsize, full-size trucks and vans can count on Monroe Gas-Magnum shocks to carry the load. Not just for ride comfort, shocks are necessary for the safe handling of your vehicle. By maintaining vertical loads placed up on the tires, shocks help ensure consistent tire-to-road contact. Shocks also help maintain a balanced ride by providing resistance to vehicle bounce, roll and sway as well as brake dive and acceleration squat.

CAUSES & CONSEQUENCES OF SHOCK FAILURE

Like many parts on your vehicle, shocks are subject to wear. Causes include damaged bushings, exposure to the elements, loss of oil viscosity and deteriorated components. Driving with worn shocks can result in problems ranging from reduced braking efficiency, tire wear, loss of stability and damage to other suspension parts.

Monroe Gas Magnum Shock Absorber Module 5

DIAGNOSING NOISE WITH NEW SHOCKS

If noise is present with a replacement shock absorber, check that the mount is tightened securely and look for other worn suspension parts. Some shock absorbers utilize a “clevis” type mount, which must squeeze the sides of the shock’s “mounting sleeve” very securely in order to prevent noise. Using new hardware and mounting bolts help ensure its tightened securely. Check the brackets to make sure they didn’t get spread apart excessively when the original shock was removed.

Monroe Gas Magnum Shock Absorber Module 5

IMPORTANCE OF ALIGNMENT

Always perform an alignment whenever replacement shocks, struts or other ride control parts are installed. Camber, toe and caster settings can all be affected by installing new shocks. Failure to make sure the vehicle’s alignment is within factory specifications can lead to problems like premature tire wear.

HOW TO CONDUCT A SHOCK INSPECTION

Shocks may not show any visible signs of wear, make sure to request a ride control inspection every time your vehicle is brought in for service to ensure they’re in optimal operating condition. When inspecting a vehicle’s shocks: assess how the vehicle is used and perform ride and physical evaluations. Get an understanding of the vehicle’s repair history, the way the vehicle handles and its intended use for clues if the shocks might need changing. Next, take the vehicle for a test drive to determine whether the vehicle’s steering, stopping and stability are compromised. Wrap up the inspection with a physical examination for symptoms of wear which may indicate new shocks are required.

Safety & Suspension Health

Worn shocks increase stopping distance and reduce control—especially dangerous in older, heavier trucks. Fresh Gas-Magnum shocks restore predictable handling and reduce stress on springs, bushings, and tires.

This is safety maintenance disguised as a repair.

These shocks are absolutely amazing for the $50 i paid for the pair. I put these on my 1998 Chevrolet C1500 that has 180k miles and had the original shocks. Prior to the installation the rear of the truck would bounce and nearly cause the truck to change lanes when i hit bumps in the road. Installation was really easy. Lower bolts require two 21mm sockets and upper bolts require two 13mm sockets. These shocks are twice as thick as the old shocks and provide a much smoother ride than the oem shocks did. I’d like to say that i am an average guy and it was difficult for me to compress the shocks after removing the cables that kept them compressed but not impossible. I installed the lower bolt and then cut the compression cable to allow shock to extend to the upper mounting bracket. This was the most valuable and cheapest improvement i have made on this truck since i purchased it. Definitely well worth the value!

Worked very well on my 98 K2500 Silverado. I enjoy the ride quality and haven’t had any issues with them for the few months they have been on the truck.

Nice, firm and proper feel back to a heavy duty 3/4 ton pick up truck. Removed a lot of harshness from the OEM and well worn (165K miles) shocks. I noticed a much nicer highway ride and better handling. The compressed gas has a lot of force so prepare when you are ready to cut that cord.
