Why Upgrade to the AEM 21-786C on Your 10th Gen Civic?
Honda did a good job with the factory intake… for a commuter. Not for an enthusiast.
Upgrading to the AEM 21-786C gives you:
-
Improved airflow versus the restrictive stock airbox and resonators
-
Better throttle response and midrange pull you can actually feel
-
Deeper, sportier induction sound (yes, you’ll finally “hear” the turbo)
-
Reusable Dryflow filter – no oil, no MAF drama
-
A clean, gunmetal gray powder-coated tube that actually looks good when you pop the hood
For Civic owners who love the platform but hate how muted it feels from the factory, this intake is one of the best “day one” mods you can bolt on.
The AEM-21-786C Performance Cold Air Intake System produces horsepower and torque gains by replacing your vehicle’s restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing.
Key Features of the AEM 21-786C Cold Air Intake
-
Tuned aluminum intake tube
Mandrel-bent for smoother airflow and optimized routing for the 1.5L turbo Civic engine bay. -
AEM Dryflow Air Filter
-
Washable and reusable
-
No oil needed (so no over-oiling MAF nightmares)
-
High-flow design to feed your turbo fresh, cool air
-
-
Vehicle-specific heat shield / mounting
Designed to work with the Civic’s factory mounting points and underhood layout for a clean, OEM-plus install. -
Improved sound and drivability
Hear the turbo spool and bypass valve more clearly under load, with no obnoxious drone. -
Durable gunmetal finish
Powder-coated for long-term corrosion resistance and a premium appearance.
This air intake system was designed, tuned and dyno-tested to fit select Mazda MX-5 Miata models. Air enters the system through an oversized AEM Dry flow synthetic washable air filter for outstanding air flow, filtration and performance. The air filter is located in the original air box space and is protected by a heat shield which is designed to reduce intake air temperature and increase horsepower.
What Kind of Gains Can 10th Gen Civic Owners Expect?
On the 1.5T Civic, the AEM 21-786C is designed to:
-
Support increased airflow over stock, especially at higher RPM
-
Improve throttle response and transient power (that punchy feeling when you get on the gas)
-
Help support future mods like tunes, intercoolers, and exhaust systems by removing an air intake bottleneck
Exact horsepower gains will vary, but the big win you’ll notice right away is sharper response and a much more engaging sound every time you roll into boost.
Attached to the heat shield is an aluminum coolant overflow reservoir that replaces the stock reservoir so that the air intake will fit properly. The air intake tubing is constructed from mandrel-bent aluminum featuring a durable gunmetal gray powder coated finish.
Daily-Driver Friendly for Your Civic
The AEM 21-786C isn’t some sketchy race-only setup:
-
Designed for street-driven Civics
-
Uses high-quality hardware and brackets to avoid rattles or loose fitment
-
Dry filter is easy to service and doesn’t require constant attention
-
Works seamlessly with the factory ECU; no tune required (though a tune + intake is where things get fun)
So if your Civic is your commute car, weekend car, and “I swear I’m not going to mod it anymore” car, this intake still fits your life.
This air intake system was developed to accommodate the engine’s factory emissions control devices including the mass air flow sensor and PCV hose.
Installation on a 2016–2021 Honda Civic 1.5T
Most owners with basic hand tools can handle the install in the driveway. In general, you’ll:
-
Remove the factory airbox and intake ducting
-
Install the AEM heat shield / mounting hardware
-
Bolt in the mandrel-bent intake tube
-
Attach the AEM Dryflow filter
-
Tighten clamps, reconnect any hoses/sensors, and double-check clearances
AEM provides model-specific instructions, so as long as you can follow directions and aren’t afraid of a few plastic clips, you’re good.
The tapered cylinder shaped AEM Dry flow air filter is made from an oil-free, synthetic filter media that can be used for up to 100,000 miles before cleaning is needed (depending on driving conditions).
Who Is the AEM 21-786C Ideal For?
This intake is perfect if you:
-
Own a 2016–2021 Honda Civic with the 1.5L turbo engine
-
Want more intake sound and character without going full race car
-
Plan to tune or upgrade your Civic later and want supporting mods already in place
-
Prefer a reputable brand with proven engineering rather than no-name “universal” kits
If your Civic is still on the stock airbox and you’re doing exhaust, tune, or just want it to feel alive, the 21-786C is a smart, foundational mod.
The air intake system is easy to install with commonly available tools. Some AEM air intakes are not legal for sale or use in California and other states adopting California emission standards, while others are 50 state legal. View the 21-786C vehicle applications to determine the legal status for each vehicle.

Was easy to install and the car sounds better now. Do be warned I lost 1 mile per gallon if that is an issue for you. Throttle response feels a little better but that might be placebo. Would definitely recommend better screws. After a couple months they are already rusty.

I have nothing to say about the intake itself other than if you read any forums you will know the AEM Dyno is not accurate and this adds zero HP in reality ( as all ND intakes do) and if anything may lose you 1-2 hp due to heatsoak. That aside I purchased this for the looks and a little extra intake noise. I received it very quickly thanks to amazon prime but the shroud had poor quality control as the main mounting tab that sticks out in the engine bay was covered in tape. I unwrapped the tape and it had this hard rubber on it and once I cut it away with wire cutters the main mounting tab was visibly bare metal and unpowder coated. Now sure this tab could have been spray painted black and down the road I could have went, but thats not acceptable for $380 when the powdercoating is much more durable and the spray paint wouldn’t match and would flake. There is a big warning to not return the product to the vendor and to contact AEM instead so I did two weeks ago asking for a new shroud and in exchange I would mail them this one back. Crickets. Did not hear a single word back after two weeks and my amazon return window is almost closing so I will be returning this to amazon and purchasing it from another vendor elsewhere – So beware if you see one for sale via amazon warehouse it is probably this unfinished one. Also be aware that AEM support is inexistent and quality control is poor.

Installed this intake in about 40 mins. Better sound and a smooth high rev fuel drop off. Well worth the money.

Not the easiest to install, but that is on Mazda not AEM. The intake itself is a quality product.

Only giving one star because it did give a power increase noticeably, but the replacement coolant tank leaking at the weld, one of the mounting plates is bent fresh out of the box. Will be returning
