Installation & Fitment Notes
-
Installation time: modest. If you can handle tools and an attitude (check), you’ll manage this in under 2 hours.
-
Ensure your model has the correct engine (1.6L L4 non-VTEC) and the CX/DX/LX trims listed. The fitment list covers those years/engine types.
-
After installation, ensure all clamps are tightened, hoses reconnected, and no interference from the wheel-well or splash guard. The wheel-well placement means you might need to ensure clearance for the liner and check that nothing is rubbing.
-
Depending on emissions/region, check legality: While AEM claims “50-state Street Legal (some model and years still pending)”.
AEM Air Intake Systems are designed to produce massive horsepower and torque gains as well as better engine sound when used as a replacement for the factory airbox and air filter. AEM intake systems are designed, tuned, and dyno-tested to fit specific cars and trucks. These air intakes usually include an oversized AEM Dryflow synthetic washable air filter for outstanding air flow, filtration, and performance while allowing easy oil-free cleaning.
Most AEM intake systems use mandrel-bent aluminum intake tubes, powder coated heat shields, and high quality hardware designed to reduce restriction and reduce intake temperature. The design and components of each intake system vary so consult the installation instructions for more information on the contents of each part number. AEM manufactures a variety of intake kit styles including short ram intakes, cold air intakes, dual-chamber intakes, Brute Force intakes for trucks and SUV’s, and Brute Force HD intakes for diesel applications.
Final Verdict
If you’re driving a 1996-2000 Honda Civic CX/DX/LX with the 1.6L engine and want an intake upgrade that’s solidly built, looks good, and actually delivers a more engaging driving feel — the AEM 21-413B is a smart choice.
It won’t magically turn your Civic into a supercar (you know that), but it will make daily drives or weekend cruises more satisfying.
And yes — your sarcastic self will appreciate that you finally upgraded something while your IT-engineer brain nods approvingly at the build quality.

Fit my car just as expected. It came with all of the connections and bolts that I would need. Easy to switch from cold air to short ram in the winter.
