Prepare the Paint Before Compounding
Never compound dirty or contaminated paint.
Before application:
- Wash the vehicle thoroughly.
- Dry it using a clean microfiber towel.
- Inspect the surface under direct lighting.
- Remove tar and bonded contamination.
- Clay the surface if it feels rough.
- Mask textured plastic, rubber trim and sharp body edges.
- Test the product on a small section first.
Our guide explaining why washing your car isn’t enough covers the contamination that remains attached to paint after a normal wash. Compounding over embedded grit is an efficient way to create entirely new scratches while attempting to remove the old ones.
How to Apply Ultimate Compound by Hand
Hand application works well for spot correction and smaller sections.
- Shake the bottle thoroughly.
- Apply a small amount to a clean foam or microfiber applicator.
- Work on an area approximately 12–18 inches square.
- Use overlapping circular or crosshatch motions.
- Apply moderate, even pressure.
- Work the product until it begins to turn clear.
- Remove the residue with a clean microfiber towel.
- Inspect the area before repeating.
Do not allow the compound to dry completely on the panel. Several controlled applications are safer than attempting to remove the defect through one heroic session.
Applying Ultimate Compound With a DA Polisher
A dual-action polisher provides faster and more consistent correction across larger panels.
Use:
- A clean polishing or light-cut foam pad
- Low-to-moderate machine speed
- Overlapping passes
- Controlled arm movement
- Minimal pressure near edges and body lines
Keep the pad clean throughout the process. Paint residue and spent compound can reduce cutting performance and create hazing.
Ultimate Compound is intended for use by hand or DA polisher. Rotary-polisher use requires considerably more experience because concentrated heat and aggressive pad movement can damage the finish quickly. meguiars.com
Compound, Polish and Wax Are Different Products
| Product | Primary Purpose |
|---|---|
| Compound | Removes measurable paint defects |
| Polish | Refines the finish and increases clarity |
| Wax or sealant | Adds protection and gloss |
| Clay bar | Removes bonded surface contamination |
Ultimate Compound does not provide lasting protection. After correction, apply a wax, paint sealant or compatible ceramic product.
Our guide on how to wax your car explains the final protection step. Meguiar’s also recommends inspecting and correcting swirls, oxidation or stains before waxing.
Important Paint-Correction Precautions
- Work on cool paint in the shade
- Do not use on matte or satin finishes
- Avoid textured plastic trim
- Use clean applicators and towels
- Start with the least aggressive method
- Avoid excessive pressure on body lines
- Stop if paint color transfers onto the pad unexpectedly
- Measure clear-coat thickness when performing aggressive correction
- Wear appropriate gloves and follow the product label
Every correction removes some clear coat. The goal is to improve the finish while preserving as much paint as possible—not win an argument with one scratch at the expense of the entire panel.

Is Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound Worth It?
Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound is a versatile choice for correcting mild-to-moderate paint defects without immediately stepping into professional-grade compounds. It cuts quickly, finishes relatively cleanly and works with basic hand applicators or a DA polisher.
It is particularly useful for restoring neglected daily drivers, removing light swirl marks and preparing paint for polish, wax or ceramic protection. Deep scratches and failed clear coat still require proper repair, because no bottle has yet developed replacement-paint technology.
