Applications That Require Additional Verification
Do not assume this starter fits:
- Four-cylinder versions of the listed models
- Hybrid applications
- Cadillac XTS V-Sport twin-turbo models
- Vehicles with a 2.8L V6
- Chevrolet Captiva Sport model years other than 2012
- Redesigned 2017-and-newer GMC Acadia models
- Any application outside the listed year range
- Vehicles whose original starter has a different tooth count or mounting pattern
Use the NHTSA VIN decoder to identify the vehicle and engine, then compare the OE starter number.
Installation Notes
Before replacing the starter, test:
- Battery state of charge
- Battery terminals and cables
- Engine and chassis grounds
- Starter relay and fuse
- Ignition-switch signal
- Voltage drop on the positive and ground circuits
- Engine rotation by hand
- Charging-system operation
A clicking starter does not automatically mean the motor has failed. A weak battery or corroded cable can produce nearly identical symptoms—and is considerably easier to replace before the intake and exhaust plumbing begin fighting back.
Disconnect the negative battery cable before installation. Follow the factory service procedure for component removal, fastener torque and electrical-terminal positioning.
Final Verdict
The A-Premium 17986 is a broad GM-platform replacement starter covering selected 2006–2020 vehicles with 3.0L and 3.6L V6 engines. Its principal specifications are 12 volts, 1.4 kW, clockwise rotation and a 12-tooth pinion.
Confirm the VIN, engine and OE number before purchase, paying particular attention to the Cadillac XTS, 2017 GMC Acadia and models offered with multiple engine families.
