Audi E-Tron GT Concept Sizzles in LA

0

Making a splash at the 2018 LA Auto show is the incredible Audi E-Tron GT concept. This E-Tron concept and technology has been a feather in the virtual cap for the German automaker, and this new concept looks to raise the bar.

Audi has been at the forefront of electric supercar performance, and it’s culminated into the Audi E-Tron GT. We’ve spotted this vehicle in spy shots ahead of the LA Auto show, but mostly under fuzzy spy shots and camo wrap. Now we get a chance to soak in the full glory of this electric supercar.

LA Auto Show – Audi E-Tron GT

Audi has been pushing the electric envelope with builds like the E-Tron Quattro that have been impressive, but this concept sets a new gold standard. The Audi E-Tron GT concept marks the third vehicle under their E-Tron moniker. They’ve continued to build on their electric super car technology and it shows in the level of refinement in this concept.

Audi claims that the production version of this vehicle will be ready by 2020. Wondering just how much horsepower the Audi E-Tron GT has? With a rated power output of 582 horsepower, the E-Tron GT puts it down to all four wheels with Audi’s electric Quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

Audi E-Tron GT

Want more Audi E-Tron GT specifications? Audi’s tested the supercar extensively, and the numbers are very impressive. How does a sub-3.5 second 0-62 MPH dash? From 0-124 MPH the Audi tips the stopwatch at a touch over 12 seconds. That sounds like Tesla beating power to me, or at the very least it throws Audi’s hat into the ring.

What’s more, Audi claims the concept is more capable and durable than it’s counterparts. Thanks to the 90 kWh lithium battery system and advanced cooling technology, the Audi E-Tron GT can run longer, harder without complications that could potentially trip up other electric supercars.

The range numbers are claimed at 248 miles, which is incredible if true. Given the level of performance in the E-tron concept, it’s an engineering feat in and of itself. But wait, there’s more! Audi also claims that they can boost range up to 30 percent using the traditional braking energy recuperation technology.

Wireless car charging is all the rage, and the E-Tron GT is no different. Audi states that the concept consumes 11 kW to charge overnight, and with a traditional wired charger an 800-volt system can fully charge the vehicle in only 30 minutes.

Built alongside Porsche, the Audi E-Tron GT looks every bit the part on stage in LA. Carbon fiber is found throughout the concept car, including the entire roof and rear diffuser. Dimensions for the concept are very similar to the Audi A7, but the E-Tron GT cranks up the performance wick considerably.

Expected to be available in 2020, it remains to be seen just how serious of a contender the E-tron concept is when stacked against the competition.

2019 Chevy Camaro SS Review

0
2019 Chevy Camaro SS

Now the sixth generation Camaro may be divisive to most muscle car fans, but there’s no doubting just how great the SS is. There’s a lot to like about the 2019 Chevy Camaro SS, especially after the 2016 Camaro redesign. Turns out, Chevy wasn’t done when they gave the iconic muscle car a face lift.

When you combine the parts of the Camaro as a whole, it’s easy to see that Chevy left no room for compromised performance and that’s the way we like it.

Any discussion about the merits of the Camaro of course start with the advances to the drivetrain. Indeed many hardcore purists gnashed their teeth when they found that Chevy would couple a 10 speed automatic transmission to the SS.

We found our time behind the wheel of the all new 2019 Chevy Camaro SS quite rewarding. Let’s take an indepth look at this muscle car and just how it stacks up against the competition.

2019 Chevy Camaro

2019 Chevy Camaro SS Review

What is there left to say about the Camaro that hasn’t already been said? Incredible engine, great transmission choices and an overall package that redefines the muscle car genre for the next generation of enthusiasts.

Legendary small block form factor, with big block torque and horsepower. Push the Camaro and it responds with vigor. Tasking the corners under load, and you’ll feel the rear end step out with predictable stability.

Chevy’s Magnetic Ride Control is exceptional over road imperfections. Suspension in the Camaro responded to every turn, providing superior control and stability at speed.

Sounds like a winning formula, although we wish Chevy would do something about the dreaded Camaro blind spot. More on that later.

2019 Chevy Camaro

Of course what stands out the most during our time with our 2019 Camaro was the drivetrain. You may think the Camaro transmission is a slushbox that fails to inspire, but you would be wrong in that assumption.

The multi-clutch 10-speed transmission found in the 2019 Chevy Camaro is lightning fast and inspires confidence with every shift. Chevy has reported that their transmission shifts were in the 150 milliseconds, try that with your manual transmission.

The Camaro doesn’t waste any time getting you to that next gear in other words. Upshift and you’ll notice that the engine speed changes to match the transmission. Impressive indeed.

Interior Review – 2019 Chevy Camaro

Overall there’s not much to hate about the performance of this machine. Not everything can be perfect however, and our main complaints about the 2019 Chevy Camaro revolve around the interior.

Although the interior of the Camaro is spacious, it’s not in a manner that seems useful or even wanted. The doors are heavy and cumbersome, harkening back to F-bodies of yesteryear. High sills and a low floor plan make you feel like you are sunk in quicksand when driving.

And of course, who can talk about the interior of the Camaro without talking about the massive C pillars. Simply put, you aren’t going to see much in your blind spot. In fact I don’t know if the word “spot” accurately describes how bad these pillars really are.

Whats new – 2019 Chevy Camaro SS

There’s a lot to love about the 2019 Camaro SS. Brute power that’s predictable and linear. Improved mileage through the remarkable 10 speed automatic transmission. Other than those changes, there’s not much else that separates the 2016 upgrades to the Camaro.

Of course there are minor upgrades to the Chevy. Third generation infotainment ties your technology together. Redesigned front end and taillights that round out the exterior and plenty of interior accents that allow the 2019 Camaro to stand out.

At the end of the day however, it’s the performance that matters most to muscle car fans. And in this note the Camaro does not disappoint. Wonderful sounds that roar from the exhaust, the sweet pull of torque and 3 different engine modes to provide flexibility. Activate Stealth mode around town, and turn to Sport and Track modes when you want to have some fun. Sounds good to us.

2019 Toyota Prius AWD on the Horizon

0
Toyota Prius AWD

For years now, there’s been talk of an all wheel drive version of America’s favorite hybrid. Toyota has balked at these advances until now, as they’ve just announced the all new 2019 Toyota Prius AWD. This model is called the Prius AWD-e, which should perform well in the US.

Along with an upgraded drivetrain, the Toyota Prius AWD gets a bevy of new options. These include but are not limited to an extensive increase in paint colors and changes to trim levels. The biggest change however is the all wheel drive element in the new 2019 Toyota Prius AWD.

The interior and build quality of the Prius AWD looks to be much improved. In fact during our drive, we could only find that the steering feedback felt vague and unconvincing. Other than that, there’s not much to complain about!

Wondering what the difference is between the old and new? Check out our Prius AWD specifications below to see just how the new Toyota Prius AWD stacks up to the competition.

Inside the 2019 Toyota Prius AWD

Equipped with Toyota’s all wheel drive technology, the 2019 Toyota Prius AWD is more than just pretty. At the heart of the all new AWD Prius is their independent electric motor assembly.

This system powers the rear wheels, increasing traction and overall safety. Anything from 0-6 miles an hour, these rear wheels are constantly engaged. The complex AWD-e system stays engaged and keeping you safe all the way up to and even sometimes over the 45 mph threshold.

That’s right.. the AWD Prius uses a separate electric motor that supplies power to the back tires full-time. Talk about something that sounds wonky, but knowing Toyota probably works extremely well.

Although mainstream all wheel drive electric cars may be a tad bit off, it’s a clear sign of how the automotive market is leaning. Eliminating our dependency on fossil fuels is no longer a viable alternative.

The Prius AWD-e is powered by the venerable hybrid four-cylinder engine. This 1.8 liter is delivering big time and is able to squeeze the most performance despite the additional weight and unsprung load on is body.

First Drive – 2019 Hyundai Veloster N Review

0

Making it’s appearance in 2011, the Hyundai Veloster has enjoyed a fair amount of success. For all of it’s affordable and budget minded sporty accolades however, the Korean hatchback has been a bit of an afterthought in many tuner circles. Luckily for us, the all new 2019 model could very well change your mind. We take the hatchback for a spin in our Hyundai Veloster N Review.

At a cursory glance, the Veloster we were allowed to drive at the event didn’t look like much. For the uninitiated, the hatchback could be assumed to be nothing more than a handful of manufacturer exterior upgrades.

Hyundai Veloster N review

The larger wheels, the upgraded front grill and additional accents didn’t do much to convince us otherwise. After all, we’ve got a project Veloster of our own, one we will be bringing live coverage to soon.

So to say that our time in this Hyundai Veloster N review started out a tad boring is to be assumed. Getting behind the wheel and turning on the Veloster seemed simple, even routine. All of that drab weariness woke us up at the first turn and stab of the throttle however.

Let’s take a look at this awesome machine, and how it could shape the upcoming hatchback wars.

Inside the Hyundai Veloster N review

Named after Hyundai’s engineering facility in Namyang, Korea; the “N” is their flagship performance offering. Representing the very first performance vehicle of their lineup the Veloster N is more than the sum of its parts.

In fact this hatchback is dare we say it, impressive and more than a stable foothold of credibility and performance that be relied on. Hyundai has built a reputation on strong decisions and empowering their people to lead them to victory.

They didn’t waver when it came to the Hyundai Veloster N either. Hiring a bevy of former engineers from the renowned M division, the Veloster N is purpose built.

Built on the venerable 2.0 liter engine that’s driven a generation of turbocharged vehicles, the Veloster N was quite impressive. Driving the N was easy part of our Hyundai Veloster N review, let’s just say that.

Driving Impressions – Hyundai Veloster N review

With roots harkening back to Evolutions of yesteryear, the Veloster loves to rev and run hard. Like the 4G63 of years past, the N responds to boost as you would expect. Stomp on the accelerator and you understand how Hyundai aims to make a mark.

Although the pickup and decreased lag of the Veloster shines, as expected it does leave you wanting for more top end. Saying that however it was pleasing to find that the midrange is more than game.

This can of course be attributed to the twin scroll design of the turbocharger. The fact one is found in a production performance car like this speaks volumes to how serious Hyundai is.

The same engine is also found in the turbo version of the Sonata. Hyundai upgraded the Veloster with an increased exhaust and related components, cranking up the wick just a tad. Driving the Veloster makes you appreciate the turbocharged rockets of the 90s, and it is ever ready to play it’s part.

This amounts to 270 horsepower and 268 ft lbs of torque for the Performance Package. With electronic exhaust control and a nice little steering wheel button to boot, the N can come to life.

Handing the Veloster

Handing at speed is where the real fun began in our Hyundai Veloster N review. Driving a route through Highway 1 didn’t hurt things either, giving the hatchback it’s full run.

Performance mode is Hyundai’s electronic control that gives you the ability to crank up everything about the N. Suspension responds faster, steering input steps it up a notch and the throttle becomes far more responsive.

Wrapping 235 Super Sport P Zero’s at each corner doesn’t hurt either, if you know what I mean. Pushing the Veloster didn’t produce any instability, in fact it’s almost like the car wants you to mash it.

Braking is handed by massive 12.4 inch discs in back and a chunky 13.6 unit up front. Hyundai also included venting to cool the brakes at speed. With this much control and braking, it will definitely be interesting to see the Veloster vs Civic Type R battles to come.

At the Civic Type R continues breaking records however, Hyundai has it’s work cut out for it. Considering the performance evident in our Hyundai Veloster N review however, the Civic Type R is going to be an interesting opponent.

Owner Mad After Tesla Dyno

0

There’s an owner demanding a buy back after getting the results of his poor Tesla dyno. In fact his dyno tested Tesla performed so poorly that the man is even considering suing the Silicon Valley manufacturer. And while this man is angry about his dyno results, the over estimation of horsepower is nothing new.

Manufacturer horsepower claims have always been a source of contention. There’s a good reason for this phenomenon. Some cars simply aren’t what they are advertised to be. Other owners don’t realize that horsepower estimations are never at the wheel.

Whatever the reason, this owner is piping hot about his Tesla dyno. With all the recent scandals revolving around Volkswagen and manufacturer lies, it appears consumer confidence continues to take a hit.

Man Angry with Tesla Dyno

The Tesla owner, a Mr Sacha Barnes, from Melton Mowbray in the UK is furious. Upon visiting his local speed shop to have his Tesla dyno tested, he didn’t see the 691 horsepower figures he was  expecting.

Mr Barnes is no stranger to performance, also owning a Nissan GT-R. In fact he felt as though his Tesla Model S was incredibly underpowered all things considered. So consider his surprise when he got a Tesla dyno that read 300 horsepower lower than what he expected!

At just 393 rated horsepower, let’s just say that the Tesla dyno didn’t calm Sacha down. Instead, following the results, Sacha demanded that Tesla buy the car back at a full refund.

“Sacha got his Tesla dyno results today. He found it maxed out at 393bhp”

Could this really be the case? Could Sacha’s Tesla Model S really be putting down just 393 horsepower?

Well no, as it turns out it’s not that easy. You see there’s a lot of misunderstandings when it comes to dyno tuning. One of the common mistakes people make when prepping for the dyno is not understanding the process.

Because a chassis dyno reads the torque put out by the vehicle and calculates horsepower, the function of the P85 is far different. When you dyno a Tesla, you are reading just the output from one of the P85’s onboard motors. According to Tesla, the combined output when the Model S is at speed is where the horsepower racing comes from.

Tesla spokesperson went on to elaborate on the point of Tesla dyno numbers.

“A true indication of EV performance that is directly comparable to an internal combustion engine is the 0-60 mph time and torque figures we quote.”

Although those who understand dyno tuning know what she means, I don’t think the Tesla owner does. According to reports, Tesla is organizing a buy back, which should make Mr Sacha very happy.

Hardcore Scooby – GDB Subaru Impreza Spec C

0

Known for their legacy of racing performance, the Subaru Impreza Spec C is not available in the US. Instead you’ll have to take a jump across the pond in a quest for unbridled Subaru performance. While JDM purists may talk down the Spec C, this Impreza means business.

Of course working your way through the phone book listings of special Imprezas can be confusing. Despite the fact that Spec C Imprezas command big money thanks to their undiluted motorsport pedigree, many may still pine for the Type RA or even the tS.

We take a look at one of the purest Subaru’s ever built. Let’s take a look at the Subaru Impreza Spec C and everything that makes it so remarkable.

Subaru Impreza Spec C

Inside the Subaru Impreza Spec C

Born from the roots of homologation rally racing, the Spec C has a name many Subaru fans are well familiar with. The original rally performer was in fact the WRX STI Type RA that can be found in the first-generation or GC8 chassis.

Of course the Type RA doesn’t have much to differentiate itself from the pack. The Subaru Impreza Spec C also sports a roof vent system that’s incredibly unique. Only other differences between the two is the huge amount of weight reduction in the Spec C rally racer.

What makes the Subaru Impreza Spec C special?

Other than being incredibly rare, the Spec C is effectively a pure race car. Being a purpose built Group N rally car isn’t something that most people understand, let alone appreciate. Because all Subaru Impreza Spec C rally cars were indeed purpose built, there’s not much in the way of creature comforts.

Good thing for us, we don’t need the extra frills. Fire up the Subaru Impreza Spec C and you’ll notice the exhaust note that threatens to dull your hearing instantly. The lack of radio, power windows, locks and anything else that could be used for anything other than winning races is the next thing that strikes you.

Underneath the bonnet of the Subaru Impreza Spec C is a semi-closed deck EJ20 STI engine. The open deck design was reinforced to increase cylinder wall strength. The engine in the Subaru Impreza Spec C is then enhanced with forged pistons, ported cylinder heads and increased valvetrain components.

Increased boost from the Subaru Impreza Spec C turbocharger brings power output over 300 wheel horsepower. But, that’s not all the Spec C has in store for you. There are enhanced drivetrain parts such as a plated rear differential, higher caster front suspension arms, and a quick steering rack. The engine is mated to a close ratio gearbox, and a stiffer clutch puts it to all four wheels.

Subaru Impreza Spec C Specifications

  • Performance: 300bhp – 283lb ft of torque
  • Engine: 2.0-litre semi-closed deck EJ20 boxer engine
  • IHI VF34 ball-bearing turbocharger
  • factory forged pistons
  • big port heads

  • 50-litre half saddle fuel tank with anti-surge fuel pump assembly
  • 12-litre intercooler spray bottle
  • Transmission: Six-speed close ratio gearbox

  • gearbox oil cooler

Subaru Impreza Spec C Exterior Specifications

  • Sumitomo four-pot front brake calipers
  • ABS delete
  • highcaster front alloy suspension arms
