Knock sensors are monitoring devices that allow your Ford PCM to control and check your engine for power robbing detonation. Irregular detonation or pre-ignition can damage your engine pistons, rings, and ring lands. When your Ford knock sensor goes bad, it can cause your ignition timing to become erratic.

Because the Ford knock sensor is basically a microphone, replacing your knock sensor will allow you to get rid of any check engine lights. If your Ford was built before 1996, your knock sensor failure can cause loss of power, black smoke from your tailpipe and bad gas mileage. It can also cause your engine to fail or break, which is why you should replace your Ford knock sensor right away.

If you are having problems with other parts of your Ford engine or sensors, this can contribute to your engine knocking situation, try checking your Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor or your Ford Oxygen Sensor.

Locating and replacing your Ford knock sensor can be hard in your LTD and depending on your engine configuration, you may have one Ford knock sensor located in the spark plug galley, or on the side of your engine.

Some V6 and V8 configurations will have provisions in the middle of your Ford engine, while other layouts will have your knock sensor screwed into the shortblock. LTD owners can find help with their Ford knock sensor online at our blog or online community My Pro Street.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the engine for  conditions that can cause an issue with your engine or vehicle. If the ECM or PCM detects a potential problem, a warning light called a “malfunction indicator light” (MIL) on the dashboard is illuminated to alert the driver of a problem. This light is usually identified by the words “Check Engine,” “Service Engine Soon,” or the word “Check” along with an engine symbol.
